The Glocal Community Gardens

Glocal Community Gardens

Garden Work Crew 2018_07

Eleven years ago Mark VanSkiver, along with Mark Fischer, started the International and King’s garden. Mark Fischer retired from the garden about a year ago and Mark VanSkiver just handed over the reigns to Carolyn Langley this summer. To both Marks – Thanks so much for your vision, passion and faithful service that has not only blessed many people with fresh vegetables, but, more importantly, you have also provided opportunities for new friendships to be formed with our New American friends !  You will be missed, although, don’t be surprised if you see Mark VanSkiver leaning on a rake talking with some of the international gardeners. The friendships continue!!!

Also, thanks to Carolyn Langley, who is part of the Glocal staff and has been training with Mark VanSkiver over the last 4 months, will, among other things, be taking over the Glocal Community Garden responsibilities!  In the last 6 weeks there have been 4 work groups from Cole Community, Faith Coummunity Bible Church, YWAM and a few other churches (more than 100 volunteers!) that have worked along side our new American friends. Here’s a short garden update from Carolyn,

“I’ve spent the majority of my time working in the Glocal Community Garden on Cole Community Church’s campus.  The garden is a half acre sub-divided into small plots where 40-50 refugees (New Americans) grow their produce.  Since April, the gardeners have been busy at work and have transformed the weeds into a field of crops!  A few plots opened up and it was a joy to welcome 5 new gardeners (3 Congolese, 2 Bhutanese)!  Many of them live in apartments, so this provides an opportunity to grow produce to feed their families.  Some of the vegetables are specific to their cuisine.  I believe it provides joy and healing as they adjust to life in Boise.”
